This weekend I very much enjoyed visiting a project that was completed mid last year. It's not often that fun small projects come along that really make a difference to the owners, but when they do it makes it all worthwhile.

This project started life as a rather derelict shed out the back yard that used to be the creative outlet (the walls the canvas for graffiti expression) of the owners teenaged kids and their mates. When one  of those teens later decided to start up a home hairdressing salon from the space, we were brought in to see what we could do with the space.

We were very keen to renovate the existing building but unfortunately during lining removal, extensive damage from a previous fire was discovered. The building consequently demolished, a new building matching the original in scale and form, was built within the same footprint. Thankfully the floor boards were salvaged from the existing building and stained to provide a rather crisp counterpoint to the Resene Black White walls and ceiling.

The space was tight but we managed to fit in three cutting stations and a washing bay, plus a very pleasant deck accessed through bifolding doors that open the salon up during summer months.

Though small, the Mirimar based salon has been very successful for Hereby Hairdressing, which you can read more about at

More photos including pre-constuction photos can be found on our portfolio page.

Of course these projects can't happen without the careful attention that the builder puts into them. Jason from JD Construction did an exemplary job!
